Dear colleague,
Due to your long standing contribution to the non-profit artistic milieu, Skol would like to invite you to join us in a day-long master class led by renowned artist Julie Ault, cofounder of Group Material (New York).
Under the spectre of the Conservative majority government, and a generalized feeling that critical practices have been embraced by public and commercial galleries, much energy in artist‐run centres is diverted from programming toward negotiating the contradictory states of survival and growth. Many not-for-profit centres in Montréal have become preoccupied with the state of their archives, or of historicizing their activities, as if in response to the fear of closure or of no future. What happens if we stop doing what we are doing?
Active from 1979‐1996 in New York and internationally, Group Material was a not‐for‐profit artist-run organization focused on collaborative and socially engaged artistic practices. Drawing from her lived experience as a participant, and her later role as the ad hoc historian for the group and editor of Show and Tell: A Chronicle of Group Material (2010), Ault will lead non‐profit cultural workers in a day long reflection on the process of mourning the loss of an ideal. What can we learn about our own condition from the closure experience of others?
Although there are differences between New York and Montréal artist‐run culture, Ault will bring her experiences to bear upon the local situation by speaking to acts of publishing and doing projects as the expression of collective voice.

En raison de votre implication de longue date dans le milieu des arts à but non lucratif, Skol vous invite à participer à un cours de maître d’une journée facilité par l’artiste de renomée Julie Ault, co-fondatrice de Group Material (New York).
Ault guidera les travailleurs culturels d’organismes sans but lucratif dans une réflexion d’un jour sur le processus de deuil qui accompagne la perte d’un idéal. Comme si pour chasser la crainte d’une éventuelle fermeture, ou parer à un avenir bouché, nombre de centres en sont venus à se préoccuper de l’état de leurs archives ou de l’historicisation de leurs activités. Hantés par le spectre d’un gouvernement conservateur majoritaire, et aux prises avec le sentiment généralisé que des pratiques critiques relèvent des galeries publiques et commerciales, les centres d’artistes autogérés délaissent une grande partie de leurs efforts anciennement consacrés à la programmation pour jongler les questions contradictoires de survie et de croissance. Qu’est-ce qui arriverait si on arrêtait de faire ce qu’on fait?
Actif de 1979 à 1996, à New York et à l’échelle internationale, Group Material était un organisme sans but lucratif qui mettait l’accent sur des pratiques collaboratives et engagées socialement. Puisant à même son expérience de membre active, et s’inspirant de son rôle d’historienne ad hoc pour la publication de Show and Tell: A Chronicle of Group Material (2010), Ault guidera les travailleurs culturels d’organismes sans but lucratif dans une réflexion d’un jour sur le processus de deuil qui accompagne la perte d’un idéal. Que peut-on apprendre de la cessation de l’expérience des autres?
Malgré d’incontestables différences entre les cultures de l’autogestion artistique new-yorkaise et montréalaise, Ault mettra à contribution son vécu pour sonder la réalité locale en abordant les actes de publication et la réalisation de projets comme moyen d’expression d’une voix collective

Julie Ault (born 1957) is an artist, writer, editor, who works both independently and collaboratively. She often assumes curatorial and editorial roles as forms of artistic practice. Her work emphasizes interrelationships between cultural production and politics and frequently engages historical inquiry. In 1979 Ault cofounded Group Material, whose practice explored the relationship between art, activism, and politics. Recent exhibitions include: “No‐Stop City High‐Rise: a conceptual equation,” with Martin Beck, São Paulo Biena, 2011. Her edited and authored publications include: Show and Tell: A Chronicle of Group Material (2010); Where the Lions Are (2009), in collaboration with Danh Vo; Felix Gonzalez Torres, (2006); Come Alive: The Spirited Art of Sister Corita (2006); and Alternative Art New York 1965–1985 (2002).
This initiative of Felicity Tayler is presented in collaboration with the Leonard and Bina Ellen Gallery and is partly supported by Emploi Québec, via the Comité de formation continue Arts et culture de l’Île de Montréal, managed by the RCAAQ’s coaching program.
At the time
